  • West Coast Wilderness Trail winds through ancient native forests alongside glacial rivers and past historic goldmining sites immersing you in nature’s raw beauty.

  • Kawatiri Coastal Trail follows dramatic coastlines revealing windswept beaches, limestone cliffs and serene native bush.

  • Great Taste Trail meanders past sunlit vineyards, fruitful orchards and along golden sandy beaches, offering a blend of rural charm and coastal views.

All trails are rated easy to moderate making them perfect for riders of all levels.

This trio tour can be enjoyed in either direction. Start in Nelson and head south through changing landscapes, or begin on the West Coast and ride north to finish in sunny Nelson.

Wherever you begin, getting to the trail is easy. From Christchurch, take the scenic TranzAlpine train to Greymouth, fly direct to Hokitika, or self-drive and leave your vehicle safely in Greymouth. Nelson also offers direct flights from all major cities.

Start in the lively town of Hokitika, then cycle through quiet rural communities where locals live close to the land and sea. Along the way, explore historic gold mining sites and enjoy sweeping views of the Southern Alps.

This trail offers more than just cycling. Take in the West Coast Treetop Walk, enjoy a calm river cruise, and join a guided walk through the famous Hokitika Gorge. These experiences highlight the incredible landscapes and unique character of the region.

Kawatiri Coastal Trail
40km

Next up is the new Kawatiri Coastal Trail. This family-friendly route stretches 40 kilometres from Westport to Charleston, taking you through diverse landscapes like lush wetlands, towering native forests, and rugged coastline. Along the way, you’ll pass historic Māori pathways and gold mining sites that tell the story of the region’s rich heritage.

You might also spot native wildlife such as kiwi, weka, seals, and penguins, though sightings depend on timing and a bit of luck. With gentle sections suitable for all abilities, it’s a fantastic way to experience more of the West Coast’s stunning scenery and culture.

Feel free to take a break with a night or two in Punakaiki, where you can explore the famous Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point before our local team shuttles you to Nelson to continue your adventure.

Tasman's Great Taste Trail

Finish your journey with the stunning Great Taste Trail, winding through the vibrant coastal region near Abel Tasman National Park. This final leg offers a perfect blend of breathtaking scenery, rich history, and indulgent experiences.
