Kawarau Gorge Trail
COMING SOON
Be the Trailblazer Through Vineyards, Scenic Wonders, and Timeless History
The Kawarau Gorge Trail is an exciting new cycling experience in Central Otago, stretching 32 kilometres from Gibbston Valley through the spectacular scenery of Nevis Bluff, connecting Queenstown with the popular Central Otago trails.
Set to open in 2026, this trail unlocks parts of the Kawarau Gorge that were previously out of reach, offering riders spectacular views of rugged river canyons, with suspension bridge crossings, and peaceful paths winding along the gorge.
Ideal for a wide range of cyclists, the trail is more than just a ride; it’s a journey through some of the region’s most iconic sights. Explore world-class vineyards in Gibbston Valley and Bannockburn, or step back in time at the historic Goldfields Mining Centre.
With a direct link to the Queenstown Trails network, the Kawarau Gorge Trail is perfect for those looking to extend their adventure or connect with other Central Otago rides on the Lake Dunstan Trail, Otago Central Rail Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail and the mighty Clutha Gold Trail.
Trail Update April 2026
Progress on the Kawarau Gorge Trail is moving ahead at pace, with key sections of the trail now taking shape across the gorge.
Trail formation has been completed through to the Cliff Hanger Bluff Bridge, marking an important milestone in the build. Work is now progressing across the remaining sections, steadily connecting the full route through to Goldfields.
Upstream, construction continues through the challenging Iron Ridge section, where the final land-based connections are being completed. This stretch follows a historic route once used by early travellers navigating the rugged terrain.
A standout feature of the project is the use of heli-gravelling, where helicopters are used to deliver gravel along the trail corridor. This innovative approach helps reduce environmental impact while improving efficiency during construction.
Looking ahead, suspension bridge installations across the Kawarau River are set to begin soon, alongside the addition of safety barriers and signage as the trail moves closer to completion.
While an official opening date is still to be confirmed, the Kawarau Gorge Trail is nearing the final stages of development and is set to become a standout addition to the Great Rides network.
More details and updates on available tours will be coming soon.
