With countless photo opportunities along the way, you’ll have plenty of time to ride at your own pace and soak in the surroundings.

Wine lovers will appreciate the rare opportunity to cycle between two of Central Otago’s renowned wine regions, journeying from Gibbston to Bannockburn while passing dramatic landscapes and reminders of the region’s rich gold mining history. For those interested in the area’s heritage, a stop at the Goldfields Mining Centre is well worth considering.

As you approach Bannockburn, the trail takes you along Felton Road, home to some of New Zealand’s most prestigious wineries. A visit to Carrick Winery is the perfect way to finish the day, with wine tastings and a relaxed lunch overlooking the beautiful Bannockburn Inlet.

  • Today, the spectacular Lake Dunstan Trail guides you from the Bannockburn Inlet along the lake’s edge toward the historic township of Clyde. The ride features a mix of steady climbs, sweeping switchbacks, and a few narrower trail sections, all rewarded with breathtaking lake and mountain views at every turn.

Highlights of the journey include the trail’s remarkable engineering feats, from the famous clip-on boardwalks suspended above the water to the impressive Hugo Suspension Bridge — both offering unforgettable riding experiences and incredible photo opportunities.

As you continue toward Clyde, the landscape opens into expansive lake vistas dotted with historic remnants of the region’s pioneering past. Once in Clyde, take time to explore the village’s relaxed atmosphere, boutique galleries, specialty shops, and inviting cafés.
