Itinerary

Day 1
Tree Tops - Hokitika
16 km

Arrive in Hokitika before midday.  Tucked between the wild Tasman Sea, lush rainforest and the Southern Alps, Hokitika offers a weekend escape like no other.

You will be shuttled out to the Treetops Walkway.  Spend an hour exploring the forest from up in the canopy where you walk amongst the forest giants. Then it’s on the bike, to ride 16kms back to Hokitika, witnessing one of the most scenic sections of cycle trail in New Zealand. This is breath taking and will be a highlight! Ride through wetlands and native forest.

Check in to your luxurious accommodation at the Hokitika Firestation.

Wander down to the beach to indulge in a West Coast sunset.

Day 2
Hokitika Gorge - Lake Kaniere - Hokitika
24 km

We suggest you grab a packed lunch before arriving at the Kiwi Journeys depot at 8.45am.

At 9.00am its off to the Hokitika Gorge. After a 30-minute drive to the carpark, there is a short walk through lush native bush to the rocky gorge, where you witness the calm turquoise blue water from the incredible viewing platforms. The water must be seen to be believed! NB: The guided walk will take approximately 45 minutes.

After the amazing Gorge, it is on to the helicopter for the most incredible 45-minute flight, taking you over glaciers and high alpine peaks for an experience you will never forget.

Now it’s off to Dorothy Falls (30-minute drive) and time to climb on your bikes. A beautiful 5km ride amongst native bush, around the edge of Lake Kaniere to Hans Bay, which is a fantastic location for a lunch break. You will also capture some incredible photos!

Once you leave Lake Kaniere you are in for a real treat (and its predominately downhill)!

Enter another stand of native bush and meander along the historic Kaniere Water Race (hand-dug in 1875), Hokitika’s water supply. This is amazing!

Kaniere Tram Road will take you out of the wop-wops and all the way to Hokitika and back to Kiwi Journeys depot. You may like to browse the art and craft shops and most importantly, cafés and restaurants for afternoon tea or a nice cold ale. NB: You will most likely reach Hokitika around 3.00pm.

After an activity packed day of memories for a lifetime you get to relax back in your apartment at the Hokitika Firestation.
