Wild Wilderness Experience (New)

Grade 1-3 (easy-intermediate) 135km

Cost: NZD $1449 per person

The Wild Wilderness Experience is only offered by Kiwi Journeys and delivers an unforgettable journey across all four sections of the West Coast Wilderness Trail, combining spectacular riding with four distinct and unique accommodation experiences. This adventure begins in Ross with a unique overnight stay in container pods, where you’ll fall asleep to the sound of the Tasman Sea, a true taste of the wild West Coast. For those seeking an added touch of luxury, we highly recommend upgrading to the stunning glamping domes.

The following morning, ride north to the “cool little town” of Hokitika, with day two delivering breathtaking scenery, including the tranquil beauty of Lake Kaniere. That evening, enjoy warm hospitality and a hearty meal at Cowboy’s Paradise (under new management), a remote retreat set high in a spectacular valley. Day three is a highlight, culminating in a stay at the iconic Theatre Royal Hotel, where charming accommodation and an excellent restaurant await. Your final morning’s ride to Greymouth provides the perfect finale to this remarkable West Coast adventure.

Itinerary

Arrival

We look forward to seeing you at our Kiwi Journeys depot in the main street of Hokitika, for a thorough pre-tour briefing and bike fitting. Once you’re all set, we’ll take you to your first night’s accommodation in Ross where you can relax and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the West Coast and be sure to catch a stunning West Coast sunset to kick off your adventure.

Day 1
Ross - Hokitika
33 km

After breakfast it’s time to start your adventure!  You will cycle over the Totara River, and along the Ross Ruatapu Railway line, taking in incredible views of mighty Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.

You will then cycle through wetlands and native bush before giving the bikes a rest at the Treetop Walkway. Here, you will experience the native forest, birdsong and views of Lake Mahinapua by foot from the heights of a tree canopy. The trail continues along the Mahinapua Tramline before heading back into Hokitika.

Day 2
Hokitika - Cowboys Paradise
39 km

From Hokitika township, you will cycle along the historic Kaniere Tram Road, taking in some breath-taking views of the Hokitika River before making your way into the native forest.  After 24km you will find yourself at the glistening shoreline of the 195m deep Lake Kaniere.

From there, follow Milltown Road through native bush and open farmland that parallels the Arahura River through to Milltown. From here this magic section of trail winds its way up to Cowboys Paradise through an ‘energy enriching’ Native Forest.

Day 3
Cowboys Paradise - Kumara
35 km

Trace the path of early gold prospectors as you follow historic stagecoach routes, weaving alongside canals and reservoirs built during the height of the gold rush. The landscape is rich with mining relics and remnants of old workings, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past. The majestic Southern Alps rise once more in the distance, providing the perfect backdrop—so be sure to pause and capture a few photos.

A smooth, sweeping boardwalk and scenic bush trail then guide you into Kumara, where a comfortable bed and delicious meal await at day’s end.

Day 4
Kumara - Greymouth
28 km

Hop on your bikes and head to the coast! The last ride of the trip rewards you with flawless views of the Taramakau River before making the journey to the Tasman Sea alongside coastal sand dunes and lagoons.

The ride along the Grey River will take you into Greymouth, just in time for a celebratory lunch in Greymouth at Monteiths Brewery. Kiwi Journeys will meet you here around midday.
